Solomon ibn Gabirol, circa 1050. He was a poet and philosopher in Andalusia, modern-day Spain. He lived in a time of political uncertainty and though ibn Gabirol was born in a caliphate spanning the peninsula, he died in a taifa that controlled just a piece of coastline.
