WOMEN’S HISTORY ☸ SEONDEOK YEOWANG (? – 647)The twenty-seventh ruler of Silla and first reigning queen, Seondeok was a daughter of King Jinpyeong and became his heir because he had no sons. Sources disagree about whether she was the first or second of his daughters. She had at least one sister, Cheonmyeong.
Seondeok was devoted to Buddhism and did much to advance its growth in Silla. She also built alliances with China and is credited with building Cheomseongdae, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory.
In folklore, Seondek was said to have been a precocious child with the gift of precognition.
