Maria Feodorovna, 1884

Maria Feodorovna (1847 – 1928)), 1884.

Maria Feodorovna, nicknamed ‘Minnie’, was the Danish born wife of Emperor Alexander III. She was not known for her beauty, unlike her sister Alexandra, Princess of Wales (the Empress Elisabeth of Austria remarked that Minnie looked like a monkey after receiving her in 1885). Her sister was tall, light-eyed, porcelain-skinned and with a slim figure that was considered perfect by many. Minnie, in comparison, was short and some people noted that her features were not as beautiful or as classical as her sisters (although her eyes were often described as beautiful). Rather than beauty, she became known for her charm, intelligence and wit. She was fluent in several languages (Danish, German, French, Russian and English) and was an excellent painter. By the time of her death in 1928, Minnie had ended up outliving all four of her sons, her husband, her fiancé, 5 grandchildren, 3 siblings and several other relatives. As she herself put it: ‘Misfortunes pursue me one after the other’
