Visitors lining up in front of Lenin’s Mausoleum (March 1925).

Lenin died on January 21st, 1924, and two days later the
architect Alexei Shchusev was ordered to build a structure where his
body could be displayed.  By the 27th, he had a wooden
tomb ready, and Lenin’s coffin was placed in it later that day.  The
wooden tomb is the version in the photo above.

This was replaced by a larger tomb in August, and in 1930, Shchusev
and others had completed a new mausoleum made of marble, granite,
porphyry and labradorite.  The current sarcophagus was designed by
the sculpture Nikolai Tomsky in 1973.
