WITH Putting a World of Pictures into Words, U…

WITH Putting a World of Pictures into Words, UNESCO is asking the public to join them in transcribing captions from a selection of 5,000 newly-digitized photos which demonstrate the wealth and breadth of UNESCO’s activities from 1945 to the present at https://heritagehelpers.co.uk/. These exceptional photos, available online for the very first time, document watershed UNESCO moments like the Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia (of which there are over 400 photos!). Other photos reveal themes of common international interest, including fundamental education, youth, journalism, space exploration, oceanography and more.

Trouble is, it is difficult to find all the interesting treasures they contain: specific UNESCO programmes, precise locations, individuals, and all the stories these photos tell us about the history of UNESCO’s ideas and actions over the past 70 years.

ON this Giving Tuesday, help us raise $1,000 so we can produce more of our high-quality articles about history.

Historical perspective is intrinsic to our global citizenship, as to be without this knowledge is to be permanently burdened with a lack of perspective, empathy and wisdom.

NUBIA (COLLECTION)

THIS collection is really dear to us as it is the fruit of our new collaboration and partnership with the UNESCO Archives. They have digitized a vast amount of resources that can be found on their platform and you can read all about their project in our interview about the archive launch. We are very glad to now have access to their archives and be able to share relevant media on our website.

We have based this collection on the incredible International Campaign for the Safeguard of the Monuments of Nubia. During this campaign in the early 1960s CE, ancient Nubian monuments were moved to save them from flooding by Lake Nasser, an artificial lake created by the Aswan Dam.

Here we have curated a selection of articles on Nubian heritage from Ancient History Encyclopedia, combined with historic media from the UNESCO Archives, all in one place for you to enjoy!
