Pathologic mandibular prognathism, or “Habsburg jaw” is a deformity where the lower jaw outgrows the upper jaw. In other words the person has a big chin. It most famously appeared in the Habsburg family, but it exists in the bloodlines of many other royal families of Europe, perhaps first appearing in Vlad the Impaler!

Originally owned by her aunt, the Russian Duchess Vladimir, who used the tiara as payment for passage out of Russia when several family members were killed by Bolsheviks in the early 1910’s. After the Romanian king abdicated in 1947, Marie of Romania traveled in exile from country to country holding onto the tiara along the way. Eventually she made her way to the United States, where in the early 1950’s she sold the tiara to its original creator, Cartier. She used the money to purchase a home and bring her children to America. The largest sapphire weighed 137 carats and is designed in the popular Russian Kokoshnik style.
